The mountain of Montserrat is located around 50 kilometres west of Barcelona. Montserrat is a mountain, a unique Natural Park, and a massive rock over 4000 feet high, visible for miles, with weird shapes and rounded peaks; there are paths, stairs, caves, chapels and hermitages scattered over the mountain, extraordinary landscapes and wonderful views.
The focus of their fervour is a small image of La Mare de Deu (Mother of God) said to have been made by St Luke and brought to the area by St. Peter. Blackened by centuries of votive candles the statue is known affectionately as “La Moreneta”. Around the legend has grown up an impressive Benedictine Monastery first established in AD 976 and now home to 300 monks and their visitors. Paintings and sculptures adorn the Basilica and the museum and there are also restaurants and shops for visitors. Views over the surrounding area are truly spectacular.
